Bio

Garbage were formed in 1995. They are Duke Erikson (guitars, keyboards, six string & fuzz bass), Shirley Manson (vocals and guitars), Steve Marker (guitars, bass, samples and loops), and Butch Vig (drums, loops, noise & efx). Additional musicians on Version 2.0 are Daniel Shulman (bass), Karl Lavine (cello), Michael Masley (cymbalom), Malcolm Michiles (record scratching), Jon J. Vriesacker (violin). Daniel Shulman also augments Garbage's touring line up. Past production credits for Butch Vig include Nirvana's 'Nevermind', Smashing Pumpkins' 'Siamese Dream', Sonic Youth's 'Dirty' and Hole's 'Live Through This'. Duke Erikson's past credits include U2, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and Killdozer. Steve Marker's name appears on releases by House Of Pain, Terrorvision, L7 and Sunscreem. Garbage's self-titled debut album has sold 4 million copies world-wide to date. It achieved double platinum sales in UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, platinum in Singapore, and gold sales in France, Denmark and Ireland. The album stayed in the UK Top 50 for a full year and reached the Top 20 in over 10 countries. Garbage played to audiences in 16 countries on four continents on a world tour that lasted throught 1996 into early 1997. Garbage were nominated for three MTV Awards in 1996: Best Group, Best Breakthrough Artist (which they won) and Best Song for 'Stupid Girl'. They were nominated for Best New Artist in The Brits 1996 and also for three USA Grammys in 1997 including Best New Artist. Both Garbage albums were recorded at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin. Instrumentation on the first album included guitars, synths, a barking dog, a ringing telephone, a piece of sheet metal being torn into shreds and the sound of an old air-conditioning unit. Version 2.0 features some drums recorded in the disused Madison's Candy Company, a track with 100 loops of noise going simultaneously (Hammering In My Head) and for the first time live strings (Medication). Shirley lives in Edinburgh while Duke, Steve and Butch are based in Madison, Wisconsin, USA, where they first met in college.
